How We Came About?
New Bedford ACTS was born out of concern over a recent string of violent
crimes and murders in New Bedford. It began as a Leadership SouthCoast team
project focusing on the issue of public safety in New Bedford.
Leadership
SouthCoast (LSC) is a leadership development program that requires all
participants to engage in and develop a project that will meaningfully impact
the SouthCoast region. This LSC team, which evolved into members of the
Facilitating Committee, decided to develop strategies to stem the violence in
New Bedford through a Community Dialogues process. The LSC team joined forces
with the Public Safety Committee of the
New Bedford Area
Chamber of Commerce, which had been meeting for several months. The Chamber
has taken on the role of administering the group and facilitating communication
within the group. Many area organizations have since joined the
Working Group of New Bedford ACTS.
